Missile Defense: Like in “Spies Like Us”
Toward the end of the Congressional work day, Members of the House of Representatives will often call for one-hour Special Orders sessions during which they talk about various legislative issues. On May 6, 2009, Congressman Todd Akin of Missouri, led the following session on Missile Defense.
An interesting piece of political theater for one who could never forget the movie “Spies Like Us,” here we have a number of Congressmen coming together on the floor of the House to explain why they think that President Obama placed America in danger by proposing cuts to “government spending” on missile defense programs.
Notice in this video:
1.) where each of these Members are from in relation to missile defense contractors
2.) how they breeze over the fact that it was George W. Bush who brought back “Star Wars”
3.) how they presuppose that the US always acts alone
4.) their contempt for international treaties, specifically the ABM Treaty – though it takes a missile to hit a missile
5.) the way they attempt to sweep under the rug concerns about how the missile defense initiative perpetuates and antagonizes nuclear weapons-related conflicts, tensions, and relationships
6.) and that at 07:06:30 Rep. Franks of Arizona, says that Alpha High-Energy Laser technology could provide the potential capability to “reach” anywhere on earth in a second!
